What is the difference between UPC-E and UPC-A?

UPC-A is the standard 12-digit barcode used in retail. UPC-E is a compressed 8-digit version that encodes the same information by suppressing zeros. UPC-E is typically used on small packages where space is limited.

Can all UPC-A codes be converted to UPC-E?

No. Only UPC-A codes with specific patterns of zeros in the manufacturer and product codes can be compressed to UPC-E. The number system must also be 0 or 1.

How do I know if my barcode is UPC-E?

UPC-E barcodes are visually shorter than UPC-A and contain only 8 digits (including the number system and check digit). The barcode pattern is also different, with only 6 encoded digits in the bars.

Is the check digit the same for UPC-E and UPC-A?

Yes. The check digit for a UPC-E barcode is calculated from the full UPC-A expansion, not the compressed UPC-E form. This is why the converter shows the same check digit in both formats.

Where is UPC-E commonly used?

UPC-E is commonly found on small retail items like candy bars, cosmetics, cigarettes, and other products where package space is limited and a full-size UPC-A barcode would not fit.

Do UPC-E and UPC-A scan the same in retail systems?
