Barcode Country Codes

The common question about barcodes that we get a lot from our customers is whether you can tell where something is manufactured.

Barcode prefixes do not provide identification country of origin for a specific product. They merely provide number capacity for the assignment of barcode prefixes by the GS1 to different countries. UPC Barcodes do not show the leading zero. A UPC Barcode that starts with 7 would have a country code of 070 – 079.

Every barcode number ultimately originates from GS1. You can obtain one by joining GS1 directly – which involves membership forms along with joining and annual renewal fees, since GS1 licenses the numbers to you rather than selling them outright – or by purchasing GS1-originated barcodes through a reseller such as Bar Codes Talk, usually as a one-time purchase with no recurring fees.

There is a misconception of the barcode number indicating the product’s country of origin. Please see this Snopes article about the roots of this myth and its debunking. All barcodes and barcode systems are designed for international use, so there are virtually no restrictions based on the country of origin worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

A barcode country code is the first part of a UPC or EAN number, known as the GS1 prefix. It identifies the GS1 member organization — almost always tied to a specific country — that issued the company its number range. For an EAN-13 it is typically the first three digits; for a 12-digit UPC there is an implied leading zero, which is why standard UPCs map to the United States ranges.

No. The prefix tells you which GS1 member organization the brand owner registered with, not where the item was manufactured. A company can register in one country and produce goods in another. To find the true country of origin, check the “Made in” statement on the product or its packaging.

A 12-digit UPC-A has an implied leading zero when expressed as a 13-digit GTIN. That puts it in the 000–019, 030–039, and 060–139 ranges, all assigned to GS1 US. This tool automatically adds the implied zero when you enter a 12-digit UPC.

Prefixes 680–681 and 690–699 are issued by GS1 China, so the brand owner registered there. It does not guarantee the product was made in China, and products made in China frequently carry prefixes from other countries. The viral “avoid 690–699” claim is not an accurate origin test.

These are “Bookland” prefixes used for books. A barcode starting with 978 or 979 is an ISBN encoded as an EAN-13, while 979-0 is reserved for ISMN (printed music). 977 is used for serial publications (ISSN), such as magazines and journals.

These are restricted-circulation numbers, used internally by retailers for in-store items like weighed produce, deli goods, or store-brand packaging. They are not globally unique and are not tied to a specific country, so they should not be read as country indicators.

Enter a full 12-digit UPC-A, a 13-digit EAN-13, or an 8-digit EAN-8 for the most reliable result. If you only want the country, the first three digits (the GS1 prefix) are enough. The tool ignores spaces, dashes, and other non-digit characters.
