Understanding GTIN & Barcode Types
What is a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)?
GTIN is the universal standard for product identification managed by GS1. It's an umbrella term that includes UPC, EAN, and ITF-14 barcodes. When you see GTIN-12, GTIN-13, or GTIN-14, they refer to the number of digits in the code. All retail barcodes (UPC-A, EAN-13, etc.) are types of GTINs. Amazon, Google Shopping, eBay, and major retailers require GTINs for product listings.
UPC-A (GTIN-12)
Universal Product Code - the standard 12-digit barcode for retail products in the United States and Canada. Required for selling on Amazon US, Walmart, and Target.
EAN-13 (GTIN-13)
European Article Number - the international 13-digit barcode standard used worldwide. Required for selling internationally on Amazon EU, UK, and global marketplaces.
