Understanding GTIN & Barcode Types

What is a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)?

GTIN is the universal standard for product identification managed by GS1. It's an umbrella term that includes UPC, EAN, and ITF-14 barcodes. When you see GTIN-12, GTIN-13, or GTIN-14, they refer to the number of digits in the code. All retail barcodes (UPC-A, EAN-13, etc.) are types of GTINs. Amazon, Google Shopping, eBay, and major retailers require GTINs for product listings.

UPC-A (GTIN-12)

Universal Product Code - the standard 12-digit barcode for retail products in the United States and Canada. Required for selling on Amazon US, Walmart, and Target.

EAN-13 (GTIN-13)

European Article Number - the international 13-digit barcode standard used worldwide. Required for selling internationally on Amazon EU, UK, and global marketplaces.

QR Code

2D matrix barcode for URLs, text, contact info, and more. Scannable by any smartphone. Perfect for marketing and linking products to digital content.

PDF417

Stacked 2D barcode used on driver's licenses, ID cards, airline boarding passes, and shipping labels. Can encode up to 1,800 characters of data.

Data Matrix

Compact 2D barcode for electronics, medical devices, and small parts. Popular where space is limited. Can encode up to 2,335 characters.

ITF-14 (GTIN-14)

14-digit barcode for cartons, cases, and pallets in logistics. Essential for wholesale distribution and shipping to retailers.

Code 128

High-density barcode encoding all ASCII characters. Used in shipping labels, FedEx/UPS tracking, and inventory systems.

Code 39

Alphanumeric barcode for automotive (VIN), defense, and healthcare. Self-checking without requiring a checksum.

Frequently Asked Questions

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the umbrella term for all product identification numbers. UPC-A is a GTIN-12 (12 digits) used in North America. EAN-13 is a GTIN-13 (13 digits) used internationally. They're compatible - a UPC can be converted to EAN-13 by adding a leading zero.

For Amazon US, use UPC-A (GTIN-12). For Amazon EU/UK, use EAN-13 (GTIN-13). Amazon accepts both formats as they're interchangeable GTINs. For case packs, you may also need ITF-14 (GTIN-14) barcodes.

QR Codes are square and best for smartphone scanning (URLs, marketing). PDF417 is rectangular/stacked and used for IDs and documents. Data Matrix is compact and used for small items like electronics. All three are 2D barcodes that store more data than traditional 1D barcodes.

You can generate up to 100 barcodes at once using the Bulk mode. Enter one value per line in the text area, then click Generate. All barcodes can be downloaded as a ZIP file.

The barcode images are free to use. However, for retail products, you need to own or license the UPC/EAN/GTIN numbers. You can purchase legitimate UPC codes from BarCodesTalk.com - we've sold over 200 million barcodes worldwide.
