Amazon Barcode Requirements (UPC, EAN, GTIN)
Amazon uses product identifiers to create and manage catalog listings. In many categories, sellers need a valid GTIN, such as a UPC or EAN, when adding a new product. According to Amazon FBA barcode requirements, barcodes help identify and track inventory throughout the fulfillment process.
In simple terms:
- A UPC is the 12-digit barcode format most commonly used in the United States and Canada.
- An EAN is the 13-digit version commonly used internationally.
- A GTIN is the general term Amazon often uses for product identifiers like UPCs and EANs.
If you are creating a new Amazon listing, each unique product usually needs its own barcode. That generally means each size, color, or variation needs its own identifier. If you are not sure how many you need, review our barcode pricing and quantity options.
Selling on Amazon
For most sellers, the process is straightforward. You purchase the number of barcodes you need, enter the barcode into Amazon Seller Central, and Amazon uses it to help create or match a catalog listing.
Buy the amount of barcodes you need. You can buy more than you need to receive bulk pricing, and the barcodes do not expire. See our pricing page.
After purchase, your company can be registered in the Bar Codes Talk GEPIR database.
Use your UPC or EAN barcode number when creating a product in Amazon Seller Central. This is the primary step required to use the barcode for a new listing.
Based on your UPC or EAN, Amazon may assign an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) to the product listing in its catalog.
If you fulfill orders yourself, you may not need to print or apply the barcode label directly to your product packaging, depending on your workflow and sales channel requirements.
If you use FBA, Amazon may require an FNSKU label for each unit you send into fulfillment centers. You can generate FNSKU labels and other Amazon barcode formats using our free barcode tools.
GTIN Exemption on Amazon
GTIN Exemption allows certain sellers to list products on Amazon without using a UPC or EAN. This usually applies to products that are handmade, private-label, or otherwise do not have manufacturer-issued barcodes.
GTIN exemption may make sense if:
- You sell handmade or custom products.
- You are listing unbranded products.
- Your products do not already have manufacturer barcodes.
- Amazon specifically prompts you to request an exemption for your category or brand setup.
If you already purchased UPCs for your products, you usually do not need a GTIN exemption for those listings. If you are unsure which route makes sense, visit our Amazon Listing Hub for common Amazon listing issues and next steps.
FNSKU vs UPC: What’s the Difference?
Amazon sellers often confuse UPC and FNSKU, but they serve different purposes.
- UPC: A global product identifier used to create or identify the product listing.
- FNSKU: An Amazon-specific barcode used by FBA to track inventory inside Amazon’s fulfillment network.
In many cases, the UPC helps create the listing, while the FNSKU is used later for labeling units being sent to Amazon fulfillment centers.

Common Amazon Listing Issues
Most Amazon listing problems are not caused by the barcode itself. More often, they are related to catalog conflicts, brand field issues, GS1/GEPIR lookups, or category restrictions.
Common issues include:
- Error 8572 / 5461: codes do not match the products you are trying to list
- GS1 or certificate requests
- Barcode ownership or company name mismatch questions
- Brand Registry restrictions
- Catalog conflicts such as Error 8541 / 8542
For a step-by-step breakdown of these problems, visit our Amazon Resource Hub. It includes common error explanations, message templates, and guidance for working through Amazon listing problems.
